¿Qué significa la palabra menstruación?
La palabra "menstruación" proviene de mensis, "mes" en latín. Esto te da muchas pistas acerca de lo que estamos hablando. O si escuchas a tus amigas hablar de "esos días del mes" es probable que supongas que las mujeres tenemos la menstruación una vez al mes.
Introducción: la explicación biológica
¿Qué es la menstruación? Durante la etapa fértil de la mujer, cada mes aproximadamente, tu cuerpo sufre un proceso denominado menstruación. Tener el período (o la menstruación) es una de las cosas que te indican que te estás haciendo mujer. Es parte de lo que pasa en tu cuerpo para que más adelante puedas tener hijos.
Así es cómo sucede: en el cuerpo de la mujer hay un lugar que se llama útero y es donde se desarrolla el feto (el bebé). Cada mes aproximadamente, las paredes del útero se vuelven más gruesas para prepararse por si el óvulo fuera fertilizado, y hubiera el inicio de un posible embarazo. Si esto no sucede, al cabo de un mes aproximadamente, toda esa envoltura (endometrio) se desprende y va saliendo de tu cuerpo a través de la vagina. Este es el período. Si el óvulo no se fertiliza, el revestimiento sale del cuerpo a través de la vagina. Éste es el período o "menstruación".
¿Cuándo la tendré?
La menstruación comienza en algún momento durante la pubertad. La edad habitual es a los 12 ó 13 años, pero es normal en cualquier momento entre los 9 y 16 años. No hay un momento exacto: el período aparece cuando tu cuerpo está preparado. Si a los 16 ó 17 años todavía no ha comenzado tu período, debes visitar al doctor.
¿Cuánto dura el período?
Cuando empiezas con la menstruación, la duración del período puede ser irregular, puede durar un día o diez. La duración media del período es de 5 a 7 días.
